Role Overview

The Digital Business Unit is a small team who are involved in developing and bringing to market new digital solutions to sit alongside our core expertise in navigation systems for commercial shipping.

Sperry Marine already provides their award winning “VisionMaster” Integrated Bridge System around the world to major shipping customers across container, tanker, ferry and cruise markets. The digital SperrySphere platform will enable these customers to leverage more digital solutions without compromising on safety or security

As a new business unit within Sperry Marine, the Digital team are adapting to a more agile DevOps based process to provide capabilities enabled by improvements in ship to shore connectivity and use of standardised cloud and IoT solutions. These address the needs of the modern ship owner as well as supporting the digital transformation of Sperry Marine

Within this cross-functional team are people with skills and experience in areas such as strategy, marketing and project management as well as the technical team who have skills in software, systems engineering, test, cloud technology, security and IT.

In this role you will be guiding and overseeing the delivery of the SperrySphere customer trials and development projects, splitting your time between external customers and internal development.

One of the foundations for success in digital is using customer trials as part of the development process. In this role you will lead the customer engagement, organisation and delivery of these trials with the support of the Sperry Service and Support teams.

As the first SperrySphere capabilities are sold and rolled out across customer fleets, you will assist in the customer liaison, planning and execution of the installations and will be the first technical point of contact for the customer.

You will liaise closely with the Sperry Service and Support team to ensure that training is provided to the wider internal and external service engineering organisation as well as assisting in the technical support to the customer where needed.

In the second part of this role, you will ensure that the internal and external development teams are able to deliver the project tasks that support the digital roadmap through your leadership of the development team, coordination between all stakeholders in the Digital Business unit and wider Sperry organisation as well as supplier management and customer meetings.

You will participate in internal reporting, influence the technical roadmap and the delivery of products and capabilities to the wider organisation. There will be times where you will need to be hands-on in terms of project activity so the ability to gain a technical understanding of the products and platform will be required.

Finally, as part of Digital leadership team you will take part in developing the strategic direction of the business unit.

This leadership role will have a number of direct engineering reports - network and security, test &software.

Skills & Experience

You must have experience in leading a technical team and working within an agile development environment. It would be beneficial if you had some level of understanding of the the principles of Microsoft Azure and EndPoint Manager, DevOps or the use of collaboration tools such as the Atlassian suite of applications.

You should have Experience in a company delivering software based products or cloud services and marine industry experience would be useful but can be learnt on the job.

You should have a technical/engineering based Graduate Degree and it would be great if you had some form of project management qualification.

Communication Skills – Excellent written and spoken communication is required. You will be in regular communication and direct management of a multidisciplinary team so you must be able to outline project deliverables, understand problems and convey effective workarounds to members of the team to ensure projects continue as intended. You will also have direct communication with internal and external stakeholders and customers at all levels so you must be able to clearly describe issues and solutions and must have the ability to be able to understand and adjust to the priorities of each.  You will need the confidence and skillset to understand and articulate technical product knowledge to both internal and external customers

Problem Solving Abilities – with responsibility for delivery of project outcomes, you must be able to find appropriate solutions for problems as they arise.

Keen Attention to Detail – in the management of important customer trials as well as a multidisciplinary team, you must be able to focus on many tasks at once while still maintaining close attention to the details of each.

Commercial Awareness – you must possess the commercial awareness to know how project decisions effect the value proposition of the  product, while still maintaining its safety.

Decisiveness – will be required to make significant decisions on a routine basis. Must be able to assess and understand the facts involved before reaching an objective decision that you will be fully accountable for.

Initiative – to drive trials and ensure the customer feedback reaches the development team and is implemented accordingly. Also to drive product development forward within the Digital Business and to engage other departments like the Operations and Service teams to take the new products into the business portfolio
