Role Overview

As the Lead Project Controller at Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine (NGSM) you will be responsible for effective and proactive control of a multi-million pound project across the NGSM portfolio.

In line with departmental procedures, you will develop, maintain, execute and control complex project performance baselines in a robust project control environment to ensure delivery of best value to our customers.  You may be responsible for managing and developing a small team of project controllers to best support the programme  and contribute to project controls deliverables with hands on involvement in the day to day activities.

The role will be based in either our head office in New Malden or main customer site in Cumbria and reports to the Senior Project Controller – Submarines.

To be successful in the role will require:

  • Advanced knowledge of high complexity, low volume systems engineering, procurement, contracts, with significant electronics hardware and/or software development and integration content
  • Significant experience in project controls, commercial operations, and/or prime contract experience with emphasis on project controls and financial issues, ideally in a SSRO QSC/CAAS reporting environment
  • Ability to ensure that customer and business processes are effectively and efficiently adhered to across the project team environment, with a dedication to continuous improvement and enhancement of current project controls methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying Earned Value Management System (EVMS) performance standards, preferably to ANSI or APM standards
  • Advanced ability in practical use of Primavera P6 and MS Project, KNIME reporting tool use, exposure to COBRA cost management system, and company ERP systems to
  • Experience with leading and facilitating, planning, and scheduling functions and workshops, including schedule development, control, and analysis
  • Experience in building and maintaining a cost and schedule performance baseline which includes well defined scope, assumptions, deliverables, Work Breakdown Structure, Activity ID and integrated critical path schedule that is resource loaded and allows for development risk
  • Development of accurate Estimate At Completion
  • Specific experience and demonstrated skill in leading and supporting cost management activities on projects, including cost estimating, cost control, change management, cost analysis, activity coding control, accruals, invoicing and expense management.
  • Experience in effective communications and reporting requirements that define the current status of a project in relation to the project performance baseline, reasons for deviation, and assisting with implementing corrective action plans.
  • Assisting in proposals and change management preparation and reviews
  • Reviewing, vetting and incorporating historical data.
  • Ensuring that all working documents and data are maintained Management, coaching and mentoring of project team members in a matrix environment
  • Working closely with other departments
  • Ability to successfully communicate with a range of external and internal stakeholders at all levels and functions

Please note for this particular role, all candidates must be eligible for SC - UK EYES ONLY clearance and therefore be a sole British National passport holder.

Skills & Experience
  • Understanding of project management / project business context
  • Experience in effective use of EVMS processes
  • Advanced user of project controls software including Oracle Primavera P6 and Deltek COBRA
  • Experience using cost management and finance systems
  • A strong disposition for professionally maintaining project-wide adherence and compliance to processes, and procedures, sometimes in the face of adversity
  • Training and mentoring within a cohesive team environment
  • Excellent communication (both written/verbal) and listening skills; an enthusiasm to volunteer and share opinions and views with internal and external stakeholders, and an ability to persuade others.
  • Significant, demonstrable Project Controls, Planning, Cost Management, or Accounting  experience in a similar role in the defence or, construction, rail, oil and gas or manufacturing industry over many programme lifecycles and covering concept, assessment, development, manufacture, in-service and disposal phases.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance or construction management discipline. Advanced Degree , professional qualifications in project management or control disciplines preferred eg MAPM, ChPP, PMP.
  • Security level SC UK (UK eyes only –single UK Nationality) required or ability to gain
